Gangotri is one of the four shrines of the Char Dham Yatra, located in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand at an altitude of 3,100 meters. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Ganga, symbolising purity, forgiveness, and liberation.

History of Gangotri
According to Hindu mythology, King Bhagirath performed intense penance to bring Goddess Ganga down from heaven to purify the souls of his ancestors. To soften her descent, Lord Shiva captured the river in his matted hair, releasing her gently as the Bhagirathi.
The present temple was constructed in the 18th century by Amar Singh Thapa, a Gorkha commander.
